What the MBB exam is actually like

Candidates who have taken it describe the MBB exam as roughly half strategic and half functional with respect to effectiveness competencies. In practice, that means you are tested as much on leadership, mentoring, and organizational deployment judgment as you are on the technical DMAIC toolkit that dominates Green Belt and Black Belt exams.

Real project and deployment experience matters more here than at any other belt level. Candidates who have led multiple continuous improvement initiatives, completed a range of Six Sigma projects, and mentored other Belts tend to find the strategic half of the exam much more approachable than someone studying the material cold, even with the same amount of book study.

If a topic feels thin on your first pass through your MBB reference material, do not just move on. Re-read that section, and if it still is not clicking, that is worth flagging for extra review before exam day. Training design and delivery in particular has tripped up candidates who otherwise felt well prepared.
